"I Always Feels Like Somebody's Watching Me"

Today Superkid requested a cup of REALLY cold water. I pulled a jug of water out of the fridge and poured him a cup. His eyes got really big and he yelled, "NO MOM! THAT WATER IS FOR THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!" Upon which I calmly grabbed the phone and called his father to find out what kind of millennial junk he was filling Superkid's head with. Pops had a good laugh and said that he hadn't said a thing to Superkid about fire and brimstone and the importance of a year's supply of food and water. Apparently Superkid had just been eaves dropping as we were joking about how we will be living fat when the world ends as we were loading our shelves with food/water donated from moving friends.
And as for Abizella, I couldn't be more proud. I recently picked up a pair of purple sneakers for her sprouting feet (two sizes this summer!!!!). When we got home from the store, with great urgency she quickly got the shoes out of the bag, put them on and had me tie them. Then she looked up at me and said, "Now I can grow up and go running with you Mom!" Which has to be the most endearing thing she has said to me to date. I was a little surprised that she knew that I like to run. I do it before she gets up in the morning and don't ever talk about it. She did see me at the marathon, but that can hardly be characterized as running. She is firm in her conviction to go running with me, she won't even take her shoes off to sleep, and she insists that I wear my running shoes too. She asks me all the time now, "Can we hold hands when we run?" Nothing would make me happier!

Rhode Island Immersion

One of the great things about living in New England is that you can make a visit to any corner of it a day trip. And so we did on Tuesday. And while we were in the Island of Rhode, we did out best to immerse ourselves in local culture, starting with (of course!) the beach!

Superkid spent the whole time trucking. His Oreo goatee is the perfect accessory for any trucker, land or sea.

Lil' Tadpole spent the day immersing himself in the ocean. He tried and tried to get deep out to sea, but I kept pulling him back. Even waves crashing over his head would not deter the little toad.
Boo and Abizella were more into sand immersion.

And I was pretty much there for the food, and I found a kindred spirit in Andie. It was her suggestion to immerse ourselves in RI doughboys and clam cakes (that's right, clam cakes not crab cakes). But as you can see, I was not that hard to convince.

I pretty much hopped out of the car before it stopped rolling. And once we got the whole clam cake-doughboy confusion resolved (and recovered from massive laughing fits) we composed ourselves enough to share with the hungry young ones in the back.

Don't worry Andie, now that we are well versed in the finer points of RI we can play it cool next time. Let's do it again!!

Another backdated post...

...don't miss "The Most Fun Superkid Has Had Ever" post below...

Greed

Honestly, I just can't get enough. It all started as Superkid's idea. After devouring all of the blackberries in his reach off of our friend's bush, he wanted to know when he could go back for more. I told him we gobbled all those berries up, so he suggested going blueberry picking instead. The kid NEVER suggests eating anything, so I seized on the opportunity.  Once was fun for the kids but the charm of blueberry picking was lost for them when things started heating up late in the week. I, on the other hand, am constantly plotting how I can get back to those steamy blueberry fields. There is something magically New England about picking my own fruit. I had sweat streaming down my face like a waterfall, but would have sat out there and picked all day if I could have. I am in love with these little berries. I am not even sure what I need with more blueberries when after a week we have probably consumed 4 lbs. and have another 4 lbs. in the fridge. None the less, I will be back! When I am thinking of nothing else, I am thinking of more blueberries.
I think I could get Tadpole to head back with me if I remember to scatter some blueberries on the ground for him. Unlike the strawberries, the blueberries are out of his reach. Even though he is generally a free range kid, he did prefer to ride in the Bjorn where he could shove his chubby little mitt into the blueberry bucket and stuff his mouth.
Superkid ate his way through the bushes and found it very hard to toss some in the bucket for later. Abizella, surprisingly, is not a fan of blueberries but is a huge fan of our friend Holly who came with us.

It was also Superkid's idea to make blueberry muffins (we used our favorite blueberry buckle recipe), this kid has all of the good ideas!
He was also in charge of topping the muffins off with the crumbly topping. This picture was taken after I caught him doing the old, "one scoop for me, one scoop for the muffin" routine.
Okay, after looking at the buckle picture it is clear I need to head back and stock up the freezer with enough berries to make buckle every Saturday of the long cold winter. Maybe if I get one of those head lamps I could head back there now...

Look How Excited We Are About Pioneer Day

It just isn't the same if you aren't actually in Zion watching the parade and fireworks and stuffing yourself with BBQ goodness. But we will do the best we can. Can you believe that Pops has to work today?! What is that about! We miss our Utah friends and family even more today!

The Most Fun Superkid Had Had EVER

We actually have the Blog-burns and Curious George to thank for this fun filled FHE. But once I got there and slipped on those rental bowling shoes I was whisked back to my high school summer days when I and some buddies went bowling a couple of times each week. I was always the worst one, but those were some good times.

You would have guessed that it was Superkid that grew up in the bowling capitol of the West instead of me. That kid either has it in his blood, or is a good Curious George study.

But besides bowling, there are plenty of other activities to partake. So while Superkid was whipping off balls, the rest of us did a little score keeping....

Ball tracking...
Cheer leading...
and ball management....
Actually, you may have noticed from the photos that we are using some mighty small balls. In New England "Candle-Pin" bowling is king. The bowling pins are narrower and the balls are the size of grapefruit and have no holes. I actually managed to knock over a few pins myself. Ohhh... if my high school buddies could see me now (let's just not point out the bumpers in the gutters).

Beach House Must Have

Andie-
I thought you had something a little more sophisticated in mind when you said that I need a "beach shower" at my little beach house. I'm going to run right out to Wal-Mart to get one just like yours today! ... Heaven knows, we'll use it!
