Sand- Be Gone!

The moment of truth. Last year we bought this house for a phenomenal deal. The catch, you ask? Sand- a lot of sand, in the basement. It is bad. Some of the basement has concrete, some of it is partially finished and the rest is just dirt and sand, which means that it is completely unusable space. Not to mention the hassle of trying to keep the kids out of it. It is pretty much the reason the house wasn't swooped off the market. Pops has been talking about getting it out of there for the last year. We knew it wouldn't be fun and we knew it wouldn't be cheap. Pops said he was going to enlist the kids and get a bucket brigade going the minute school let out for summer. Next he said he and the kids would do it as soon as we got back from Utah, which was the only reason I was happy to get back to work. But the reality was that there was so much of it- it would take a dumpster and the muscle and encouragement of the whole family. We mustered up our courage and ordered the dumpster for Labor day weekend.
Here it is:
It arrived the Thursday before Labor Day. By the time I got home from work, Pops had already started filling it up- two buckets at a time, with Superkid and Abizella doing the shoveling.
I didn't feel too bad that I had to work on Friday. By the time my Labor Day weekend began, the dumpster was half loaded!
That's when things got really interesting. Pops had spent the previous two days moving the sand out of this hallway in the basement. Notice how high it came up on the wall (4 feet) and it extended about 8-10 feet to a concrete wall and filled the expanse of the hall (about 5-6 feet). Pops is seriously gifted in the strength department.
The concrete wall had to come out and the only way to do it was with a jackhammer. How manly is that?! My man can do anything.

There was one last gigantic chunk that just wouldn't give.

But Pops is more than just a man of brawn. He is also a man of brains.
He decided to dig a hole and push it in.

It looks like Superkid could give this slab of concrete a little nudge and it would just topple into the hole. Wrong! Superkid, Pops and I pushed and pushed as hard as we could and it didn't even budge. Pops had to dig underneath the boulder to get that thing to fall.

But it finally did succumb. Pops and Superkid buried that bad boy! If anyone ever does an archaeological dig of the site, I'm sure they will assume it is some religious icon or something- but the truth is, it was just a pesky giant piece of concrete.
Pops was pretty sure at this point that we had more than the two ton limit of sand loaded into the dumpster, so he just threw in the paneling and ceiling tiles from the toy room to finish it off. I didn't haul an ounce of sand. Pops carried every bucket. And he was right- we got charged for being over the weight limit.
That's more than two tons of sand!
Everyone who has ever looked at the pile of sand in the basement shook their head in wonder at what it was doing there. I was sure we would uncover a body. What we found was actually worse. Whoever added onto the house, did not extend the foundation of the house from the new part to the old part. The huge pile of sand obscured this from view. That wasn't a cheap fix, but I'm glad it is now done right! You can see the awesome new foundation to Pop's left.
He and Superkid began the tedious dirty task of leveling the sand in the remainder of the basement.

And then the glorious moment! The cement mixer pulled up onto the back lawn and our cement guys poured our basement. This will go down as the one of our happiest moments as a family.
I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be able to walk the expanse of the basement without getting sand in my shoes. I can't tell you how incredible it is not to smell that dank earthy basement smell.
It truly is a sight to behold!

Kindergarten Rocks!

Today was Little Chief's first day of Kindergarten!

The smile says it all.
It never occurred to the kid to be reluctant or scared. He was just thrilled to be a big kid at the big kid school. He is our first kiddo to go to all-day kindergarten. We know he is going to love it. He loves his teacher and his classmates.

Jaws was bummed to be left out of the fun.

Just hold on kiddo, just 3 more years!
...which is more than your accumulated lifetime.

Cub Time!

The day has arrived at long last.
The day Tadpole has been dreaming of ever since Superkid first joined the Cubs. It was Tad's first day of Cub Scouts!
To say he was ecstatic doesn't give his emotions justice.
You can also see a younger sibling queuing up to follow this big brother's footsteps!

 He's looking good, right?
His first activity was making a paper-mache eagle. He has the two coolest Cub Masters of all time, Brother Doane and Brother Matkin. They are pretty big fans of Tad too. Bro. Matkin pulled me aside and asked if I keep a journal of all the funny things Tad says. He claims he is the funniest kid alive.
It is true! This kid has a gift for words.

He even got the Super-Cub award!

Abizella was happy to be back with her girls too! She adores them all!
Sister Kinney and Sister Nielsen are rock stars!

Pops' Favorite Day

Labor day was late this year, so school did not start until September 8th. Luckily for me, Pops had to go to court so I got to be first-day-of-school-mom.
Off to middle school for this sweetheart. That means he has to wake up at 6:00 a.m. everyday. A time of day that he didn't even know existed- well, except on Christmas morning.
Abizella was dying of excitement to get out the door for her first day of 5th grade. She, Tadpole and Superkid were all up, dressed and packed for school before I even got out of bed.

This one might be the class clown...

Little Chief doesn't start kindergarten for a couple of days so the big kids pushed off without him today...

Little Chief had an orientation day.
Jaws and I accompanied him.

This is a kid who is fully ready to start kindergarten.
This is a kid who is starting to realize he might be left out of something great.
This was also the day that I learned that Pops' job is not all fun and games. If I ended the post here, one might believe that this 5 kid thing is easy breezy. But the truth is this work-from-home stuff is tough. It didn't help that this was about the hottest day of the year. In between pushing Abizella and Tad off and getting LC to his orientation, I had to place a call to my IT department at work with two crazy demanding kiddos hanging on my legs. Then there was a call from the school- Abizella forgot her glasses. No biggie- we grabbed them and ran them up to the school on our way to kindergarten orientation. The school doesn't have air conditioning and we all were melting before we left. We next ran to get gas- and to get the car inspected. While the attendant at the gas station was pumping gas, another  call came form the elementary school- Abizella needed a change of clothes. Losing track of all space and time, I drove off while still attached to the gas pump. Luckily, no damage was done. We were all DYING of heat stroke by now. We hurried home to grab clothes, back to the school and did the long, hot walk back to the school reception to drop off the clothes. Since we were pretty much puddles-we decided to get some liquid refreshment and a hamburger at Wendy's before preceeding to the YMCA to register everyone for fall swimming. At the Y, the kids begged for a little time at the play area. I checked them in and collapsed in a chair for 20 minutes. We hurried home to get dinner going before the kids came home with their mountain of first-day-of-school forms for mom to fill out. We cranked out the forms- and dinner too, just in time to get the kids out the door again to go to their Tuedsay night activities at the church.

I didn't have any more days off of work to cover Pops' court day, so I worked from home. I knew it wasn't happening on Tuesday, so I worked 2 hours a night Fri., Sat, Sun, and Mon. Let's just say I was happy to give Pops his gig back and get back to work on Wednesday. He's got a tough job! ...but totally worth it.

Haircuts and Hamburgers

Well, it is time to get serious about this school stuff. The boys all lined up for haircuts so they could look respectable. Here they are zooming around on their wheels, modeling their back-to-school looks.

And our last supper- actually lunch. Hamburgers and chicken nuggets at Wendy's, something we can all agree on.
Our last supper was Hamburgers too- at the Stones.

 Now- get back-to-school kids!

Farewell Summer

It is sad to see summer pass.
We decided to drown our sorrows in a bowl of Nona's finest.
Abi and Holly came along for a cup of the good stuff.
I can never get enough balmy nights chowing on ice cream with this crowd.
Long live summer!

Nantasket Dream

These are our favorite Nantasket things...
The dolphin...

The carousel...

The baby carousel, courtesy of Abizella. Jaws didn't want to ride the big one so she gave him a whirl on the little one. Since LC has mastered the big one, he decided to go "no hands" on the little one...

Jaws LOVES horses... but not more than he fears them...

And the Surf!
Go and get em'
The little one won't be left behind...
But my favorite thing is taking pictures of my actual favorite things...

Love my beach babies.
